Continuing Professional Development
We have a long tradition of involvement with education and research at the Sweyne Park School and members of staff have contributed to many large scale research projects led by Cambridge University, The Institute of Education, the Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence on Education (CUREE) and other national organisations. At the same time, we have actively encouraged and developed the use of practitioner research by our own staff and recognise this as an extremely valuable form of CPD. Collaborative research techniques including Lesson Study have been used to develop our pedagogy and curriculum and to support the development of staff at all stages of their teaching careers. Many staff have gained formal accreditation including Masters Degrees and some have had their work published and been asked to present their findings at national conferences.
Sweyne Park School holds Training School status and is committed to working with partner schools to promote good working practices. The school was recently awarded Investors in People Gold status and is an “Investors in People Champion” in recognition of our commitment to supportive, ongoing professional development for staff. As an extension of this, we can provide bespoke training and support for schools, both primary and secondary who wish to either embed TLA into their own school practice or simply need support to carry out a TLA presentation. What we do as a TLA Centre
As part of our commitment to securing pupil success, we have worked hard to achieve a highly supportive school ethos to support our teachers in improving our reflective practice. The TLA system of accrediting school based, practitioner research fits in perfectly with these aims in its emphasis on a rigorous, collegiate approach to self improvement: coaching and mentoring, sharing good practice and influencing others, planning and carrying out the research, engaging with practitioner literature and evaluating learning and its impact.
To become an official TLA Centre, Sweyne Park School has had to meet the stringent criteria of the Teacher Learning Academy’s accreditation processes. 40% of our teaching staff completed a stage 1, 2 or 3 presentation and were verified as having met the standards required for successful recognition. Currently over 60% of teachers have been accredited.
As a TLA Centre, we undertake to carry out verification and moderation services for the TLA each week. Carrying out verification and moderation of teachers’ work means that we have not only an up to date, highly informed understanding of the standards required to achieve successful recognition, but an invaluable insight into the outstanding practitioner led research work being carried out by teachers all over the country.
Corina Seal, our TLA Coordinator, is also a lead TLA community consultant, participating in focus groups to monitor and refine the services on offer to schools.
